Beijing, April 28: China's trade with the 65 countries along the route of the China-proposed Belt and Road initiative soared in the first quarter. That's  China's commerce ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

Bilateral trade volume reached 236 billion US dollars in the first three months, accounting for more than a quarter of China's total imports and exports. Chinese exports to those countries jumped 10 percent on the year to 144.5 billion dollars, far outpacing its export growth overall.

Meanwhile, 23.4 percent of its imports in the quarter were from countries along the Belt and Road. The newly contracted projects in these nations reached 15.2 billion dollars, a 7.6 percent increase on the year.
