A distinguished and diversified delegation from China visited Pakistan-China Institute on January 14, 2015. The eight-member delegation was headed by Mr. Zhang Wei, Vice Secretary Chief Editor of Brilliance Weekly, accompanied by Mr. GaoXuming, Chairman BoXu Illuminate and Mr. XuJinpei, President Multimedia Press, Open University of China.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman Pakistan-China Institute, extended a warm welcome to the delegates and briefed them about the Institute, its projects, and the initiatives it has undertaken to promote Pakistan-China friendship and cooperation in fields such as defence, diplomacy, commerce, culture, economy, education, energy and the environment.
The Senator briefly explained the five-year history of the Pakistan-China Institute and highlighted its efforts to promote people-to-people understanding by introducing initiatives like Chinese language classes for students, publications and numerous other events including seminars and conferences.
The Senator also highlighted the recent initiative of the Pakistan-China Institute which was the launch of President Xi Jinping’s book, “The Governance of China” in Islamabad on December 19, 2014 at which the President of Pakistan was the Chief Guest.
Furthermore, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed highlighted another milestone of the Institute, the “Silk Road Initiative - Corridors, Culture and Connectivity”. He explained that this initiative aims to promote the vision of President Xi Jinping on the Silk Road Economic Belt and Maritime Silk Road, of which the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a key component. The Pakistan-China Institute is launching a major media publication which will be published bimonthly. It will bring together news, information and analysis on various initiatives, ideas and projects linking cultural cooperation with the emerging corridors that strengthen connectivity through road and rail linkages, ports and pipelines in this region.
Mr. Zhang Wei expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the Senator in particular and the Institute as a whole in strengthening bilateral relations between China and Pakistan on the people-to-people level. He added that China is interested in promoting student exchange programs as well as providing students with job opportunities. He said that he arranged a Chinese Students Expo in Karachi a few years earlier, which considerably increased the number of students going to Chinese universities. While explaining the opportunities for the students, he said that fully or partially funded scholarships can be provided by local governments or civil enterprises. Keeping in view the lack of employment opportunities in Pakistan, China wants to create a job market in addition to providing students with better education opportunities.
The Senator informed the delegation that there are 8,500 students studying in various universities and colleges across China, most of who are enrolled in medicine and engineering fields. A few universities of China have been recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan; therefore it must be ensured that students are registered to those universities which are affiliated with the HEC. The Senator added that China is an emerging power, and there is a visible shift of students’ interest from West to East.
Towards the end, Mr. Zhang Wei presented a souvenir to the Chairman of Pakistan-China Institute Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, and he reciprocated by handing the PCI Annual Report to the esteemed guest to commemorate his visit to PCI.
