A delegation comprising of prominent scholars from China visited the Pakistan-China Institute on Wednesday, 27th May 2015. The meeting was presided by Chairman PCI, Senator Mushahid Hussain and was attended by Executive Director PCI, Mustafa HyderSayed and PCI research staff. The Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Ye Halin, Editorial Director of China Academy of Social Sciences, and comprised of researchers from various Chinese think tanks and universities as well as the Academy of Military Sciences, People’s Liberation Army.

The visiting scholars were given a brief overview of Pakistan-China Institute’s activities, where the Chairman, Executive Director and PCI Director Projects, Ms. AizaAzam, familiarized them with the core projects and upcoming events of the Institute.Chairman PCI invited the visiting delegates to share their ideas on how PCI and their respective institutes could venture into joint research based projects.  The floor was then opened for a detailed question and answer session covering areas relating to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, youth exchange programs, strengthening cooperation in the field of research and the fight against extremism.

Taking the opportunity, Dr. LanJianxue, from China Institute of International Studies, appreciated PCI’s efforts in offering support to their think tank and hoped that the cordial collaboration would continue to grow in the future. Senator Mushahid Hussain summarized the rich history of China-Pakistan ties and avowed to continue building stronger ties based on mutual trust and cooperation. He also highlighted Pakistan’s support to China for its peaceful rise to the helms of global affairs.

Answering a question regarding the involvement of youth and PCI’s role in building cultural ties with China, Senator Mushahid elucidated that more than half of the population in Pakistan is young with a strong desire to work; however, this talented youth needs to be provided a platform where they can channelize their energies for productive causes. To this end, he stated, PCI has, and will be collaborating with partner organizations to create avenues to harness this rich human resource. The Senator also highlighted that youth exchange programs are important in order to sustain the bilateral ties that older generations have garnered over time; new generations need to gain a better understanding of each other’s cultures and values in order to deepen the existing relations.

The Senator also added that it is imperative to provide these talented young people with opportunities for growth, which in turn will be beneficial for the progress of both countries. Answering queries regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the Senator stressed that the corridor must be a ‘factor of unity for Pakistan’ and ensuring an inclusive approach while executing the project is of utmost importance. He also stressed the need to increase people-to-people relations and a heightened cooperation in the field of research.

The delegation agreed to explore further avenues to work together and extend cooperation.
